An online conversation on “Social Responsibility of Theologians” was held within the scope of traditional student meetings at the Faculty of Theology of our University.
The moderator of the talk program, in which Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Akdoğan was a guest, was Asst. Prof.Dr. Yunus Yazıcı of Faculty of Theology.
Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Akdoğan stated in his speech, “Man has a responsibility to his creator, himself, and all beings in the universe. When these responsibilities are fulfilled, one becomes happy in heart and soul. In this context, being believer also makes people happy. First of all, it is extremely important for a person to live a life according to this by considering where he came from, what kind of being he is, what his position in the universe is, and what his end will be. It is a requirement of his expertise in the field that a person who has studied theology should behave and act in accordance with human values and ethical values that produce the universal common mind. At this point, it cannot be as natural as society has expectations from us. A theologian is expected to be in a position that reads religion correctly, understands it correctly, interprets it correctly and sets an example to society.”
Rector Akdoğan explained, “A theologian is expected to be an example to his family, neighbors, relatives and all segments of society, while reflecting what he reads and learned into his own life in a moral sense. As theologians, we have to learn religion correctly and to bring Islam to the children of this country from its original source, directly to our people, to raise their level of religious knowledge and to bring them together with correct information, and to work for them to attain a moral quality in their lives. We are only obliged to give people the right information. In order to solve the serious problems that exist in the world today, we as theologians need to treat Muslims, believers and the people of this society correctly and fulfill our responsibilities in religious matters in order to create awareness and consciousness.”
